Haywood picked, what I believe to be the most accurate version to go off of, which is Homer’s Iliad. I feel like the Trojan War is one of the most talked about stories of Greek mythology, so there’s a lot of different way for an author to tell it.

Helen’s story has always been slightly blurred, so some aspects are up to the specific author. Apologies for the long intro… let’s get into it!Īccuracy: I would say that this is probably one of the most accurate feminist Greek mythology tellings that I’ve read so far. I know it’s another feminist retelling, but you know how much I love this I just can’t help myself.

The book provides both Helen and Klytemnestra’s point of view, from the time they were young girls to the end of the Trojan War. Klytemnestra is her older sister who ended up marrying Agamemnon (Menelaos’ brother and general of the Greek army). We all know Helen, the woman who is believed to have started the Trojan War originally married to Menelaos, then married to Paris. This book is about Helen and Klytemnestra, the two princesses of Sparta. You all know that I picked it up immediately. It probably took me about 5 months to find this book, and I was so excited when I bought it. Every time after that trip, I could never find it! Finally, I was at the State College Barnes and Noble, and I saw it sitting on a table. I saw it at Barnes and Noble once and decided to add it to my TBR list, since I was already in the checkout line and had too many books in my hands to begin with.

Let me tell you: it took me so long to find this book. The next book for the blog is Daughters of Sparta by Claire Haywood.
